Bugs are resilient and smart -- many having millions of years to devise clever survival tactics – so we formulated Zevo to be even smarter.” Zevo targets insects’ unique biology, effectively killing bugs around the home without harsh chemicals. Zevo Instant Action Sprays use familiar nature-inspired ingredients to target nerve receptors only active in bugs, not people or pets. These bio-selective active ingredients, powered by essential oils, use plants’ natural defenses to effectively outsmart a wide range of bugs. Zevo Flying Insect Traps use light and heat to attract and capture flying insects.  less

Since launching in 2010, Recycle Rally has facilitated collections of some 500 million containers. Participating schools compete in the contest and the schools that collect the most recyclables win funding for sustainability initiatives. "The success of Recycle Rally shows if we can create an environment where children feel empowered to recycle – and educated to recycle properly – they will go the extra mile to ensure their empty cans or bottles don't end up in a landfill," said Tom Mooradian, Manager Environmental Sustainability at PepsiCo. "It's about normalizing recycling behaviors at the earliest possible age so they become second nature. Our goal is that these children will change the status quo and help make our vision of a circular economy a reality."  less

Attending the conference at the Getty Center in L. A. were the Governors of Oregon and Washington, and the Mayor of Los Angeles. Proclaiming that the collaborative amounts to one-fifth of the world's economy, Washington State Gov. Jay Inslee said, "we have demonstrated that clean energy works." Oregon Governor Kate Brown agreed, saying "we are growing the economy -- a green, clean economy -- the economy of the future." Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, announced that 28,000 clean energy jobs have been created in L.A. alone in the last four years. Hawken, who is a leading voice on corporate reform and the author of the book Drawdown, leveled his greatest criticism of the night on corporate farming and antiquated agricultural practices. “Big Ag does not feed the world, it feeds Big Pharma,” he asserted. Drawdown maps, measures, models, and describes the 100 most substantive solutions to global warming in the categories of food, land use, building and construction, electricity generation, material extraction and management and transportation. Hawken says, “solutions are no longer important, they are crucial.” The event was produced by the City of Malibu and...    less

Patagonia, the American clothing and gear company and one of the earliest and staunchest corporate sustainability advocates, brought its determination to have “business be a force for good” to UCLA’s Anderson School of Business today as its VP of Social and Environmental Responsibility Cara Chacon kicked off Impact Week 2018. In her keynote address, Chacon announced Patagonia was working on a plan to be 100% climate neutral, including within its supply chain. Chacon says many organizations fail to focus on the supply chain, which could account for “85% - 90% of a company’s impact.” According to Chacon, Patagonia is currently working with 45 Tier 1 suppliers and 150 Tier 2 suppliers. She says 100% of output from Tier 1 partners is monitored and 80% of output from Tier 2 partners is monitored. She says Patagonia works very closely with its Tier 3 suppliers, which is comprised of more than 300 mapped farms that provide organic cotton, sheep...    less

According to Cambridge Researcher Dr. Nazia Mintz-Habib, who lectured on sustainable investing at SUNY New Paltz on March 29, 2018, there is strengthening sustainable investment demand as the investment community realizes that today sustainable investments have strong performance and sufficient track records. While the Cambridge Research data suggest there will be annual growth of nearly 18 percent over the next two years, some investees remain somewhat fearful of investors’ commitment to long-term investment in the category.  less

By 2025, 100 percent of McDonald's guest packaging will come from renewable, recycled, or certified sources with a preference for Forest Stewardship Council certification. Also by 2025, the company has set a goal to recycle guest packaging in 100 percent of McDonald's restaurants. Numbers are quickly becoming the weapon of choice in the battle for sustainability, according to a Leaders in Sustainability panel hosted by the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs on March 13, 2018. The panelists settled on three takeaways: (1) people must be armed with relevant metrics (2) they must be prepared to discuss their measuring process (3) and they must make sure their numbers add up. Panelists included from left: Stacie Fejtek Smith, NOAA Marine Habitat Resource Specialist, UCLA Chief Sustainability Officer Nurit Katz, Kristen Torres Pawling, LA County Sustainability Program Director and David DeRosa AECOM Mobility Planner. Since early 2015, a mid-sized car ferry, the MS Ampere, has been traversing the Sognefjord in western Norway from early morning to evening, seven days a week — without a whiff of smokestack exhaust or a decibel of engine roar. The 260-foot Ampere, which carries 120 cars and 360 passengers, was one of the world’s first modern, electric-powered commercial ships, with battery and motor technology almost identical to today’s plug-in electric cars, only on a much larger scale.  less
